“Space 1.0” Innovation and Intellectual Property (IP)
Innovation is the process of creating new ideas, new technologies, or new products that improve existing products. Intellectual Property (IP) is a legal right that protects innovation, giving creators control over its use. These laws encourage innovation by ensuring inventors can benefit from their work without fear of it being copied. Intellectual Property (IP) includes; patents, copyright, trademark, industrial design, …etc.
IP in space innovation covers newness in software/hardware, satellite imagery, and educational content. For example, satellite control codes or simulation tools are protected works, which require a proper licensing to ensure their shared use across borders.
The Center for Innovation Promotion and Research (CIPR) created “Space 1.0” product as an educational program that teaches students how satellites are designed, developed, tested, operated and collected a data using real engineering tools. Intellectual Property plays a key role in protecting CIPR’s right from plagiarism and copying, and allows the users (schools) to understand their rights of use of a “Space 1.0” product.
Protecting our team’s creativity and innovation gives us the right to save our team’s intellectual effort while sharing our “Space 1.0” product with local schools․ CIPR Aerospace will continue advancing space education and technology responsively.
